Time to Bring the Shadows into Light

Exploring Hidden Detail with the TruColor IR UV Blue Filter
At first glance, shadows often feel like the end of the visual story – areas where detail disappears and texture fades away. But with the right tools and technique, shadows can become a place of discovery.
This image of a sun dial demonstrates how the TruColor IR UV Blue Filter unlocks detail that would otherwise remain hidden, transforming contrast, texture and tonal depth in a single frame.

Capturing Beyond the Visible
The photo was captured using a full-spectrum camera paired with the TruColor IR UV Blue Filter, a combination designed to transmit VIS (visible) light while also allowing IR (infrared) and UV (ultraviolet) wavelengths to reach the sensor. This expanded spectral capture reveals information well beyond what the human eye can see, producing images rich with unconventional color and contrast straight out of the camera. As captured, the scene displays the familiar false-color palette common in IR photography – cool purples, indigos and muted highlights – hinting at the depth waiting to be revealed in post-processing.

Simple Processing, Powerful Results
One of the advantages of the TruColor IR UV Blue filter is how approachable the workflow can be. The image was first color corrected using the eyedropper tool in editing software to establish a custom white balance. This single step neutralizes color cast and brings the image into a workable tonal range without the need for complex channel swapping.

From there, a linear gradient mask was applied to the right side of the image. Within this masked area, the tones were inverted to create a color negative, then desaturated to black and white. This technique reveals fine surface details – engraving marks, stone texture and subtle variations in the shadows – that would otherwise remain concealed.

The result is a striking visual contrast: vibrant false color on one side, and high-detail monochrome on the other, illustrating just how much information exists beneath the shadows.

Why TruColor Makes a Difference
Traditional IR photography often requires heavy post-processing to achieve usable results. TruColor filters are designed to simplify that process while preserving creative flexibility.

With the TruColor IR UV Blue filter, photographers gain:
  • Balanced spectral transmission for easier white balance
  • Rich false-color possibilities straight from the camera
  • Clean transitions between color and monochrome interpretations
  • Greater control over shadow detail and contrast

Whether you’re experimenting with artistic landscapes, architectural textures or abstract compositions, TruColor filters make it easier to explore what lies beyond visible light. This sun dial image is a reminder that photography isn’t just about what’s illuminated
– it’s about what’s waiting to be revealed. With full-spectrum capture and TruColor precision-engineered filters, shadows become an opportunity rather than a limitation.

Sometimes, all it takes is the right filter to bring the unseen into focus.

Basically, the name TruColor Filters is a direct copy of my small company: True Color Infrared Filters.

Seems like someone felt short on creativity when choosing a name, or maybe I have to feel proud such a big company as Midwest Optical Systems Inc. is trying to use my name for its sub-brand?

Not only this, but also some of the statements you do in this article are just a copycat of my company's website.
